A documentary portrait of artist Jim Shore, created for an exhibition of his work at Graceland. The film explores Shore’s life and creative process—from the influences that shaped his distinctive folk-art aesthetic to the development of his signature Santa figures and the body of work that made his style instantly recognizable.
Through Shore’s own reflections and conversations with the family and colleagues closest to his work, the film looks beyond the finished pieces to tell the story of the artist, craftsman and entrepreneur behind them.
Rather than approach the project as a conventional artist interview, I wanted to build a more complete portrait of Jim—how he works, where his visual language came from, and how that personal style developed into an enduring creative brand.
I spent three days gathering the story across different environments: interviewing and filming Jim at his home, documenting him interacting with collectors at an autograph signing in Pennsylvania, and conducting additional interviews with his family and business associates, including his daughter and wife.
Those different perspectives allowed me to construct the film around more than Jim’s recollections alone. By combining his creative process with family history, professional relationships and his connection with collectors, the documentary could show both how the work is made and how the artist behind it became Jim Shore.
