In 2018, journalist Vegas Tenold discussed the title of his book, Everything You Love Will Burn: Inside the Rebirth of White Nationalism in America, and the disturbing circumstances that inspired it.
Two years later, amid nationwide protests over racial injustice, his words took on new resonance. This documentary short bridges those two moments—using an earlier conversation about the resurgence of white nationalism as a lens through which to examine the America that followed.
The film began with footage that was never intended to become a documentary. In 2018, I interviewed Tenold as one of several authors featured in promotional content for the newly rebranded Bold Type Books. During our conversation, I went beyond the planned material and asked how he arrived at the book's provocative title. His answer stayed with me.
When the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 created an immediate need for relevant editorial content, I returned to that interview. Rather than simply producing something new, I saw an opportunity to place Tenold's earlier observations in conversation with events unfolding two years later.
I built the film around that passage of time—allowing the 2018 interview to establish the idea, then using the shift to 2020 to give those words new context. What began as unused material from a promotional interview became the foundation for a timely documentary short.
