In Microdecisions, author Lacy Crawford reflects on the lasting impact of a sexual assault she experienced as a teenager at an elite boarding school—a story she later explored in her memoir, Notes on a Silencing. Through her personal account, the film considers trauma, memory and the accumulation of seemingly small decisions that can shape the course of a life.

How it was made

While interviewing authors for Hachette Book Group, I often found that the most compelling moments weren't necessarily the ones that fit neatly into traditional book promotion. Authors would tell deeply personal, self-contained stories that revealed something larger about their work—and I felt those moments deserved a place of their own.

That realization led me to create HBG Films, a short-documentary vertical built from stories I discovered through the author interviews I conducted.

Lacy Crawford’s interview was exactly that kind of material. Rather than reducing her experience to a promotional soundbite, I shaped the interview into a standalone short film, allowing her story and perspective to drive the piece. Microdecisions became another example of what HBG Films was designed to do: find the larger human story inside an author conversation and give it room to stand on its own.
