Can a human scream become a commodity?

Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk discusses one of the strange fascinations behind his novel The Invention of Sound: the buying, selling and reuse of recorded screams.

From the famous stock screams that recur throughout movies and popular culture to the much darker possibilities imagined in his novel, Palahniuk explores what happens when something as instinctive and human as a scream becomes another product that can be captured, reproduced and sold.

How it was made

This video was developed from a larger interview I conducted with Chuck Palahniuk for the release of The Invention of Sound.

As with many of my Hachette author interviews, I approached the conversation modularly. Rather than thinking only about producing one long interview, I developed questions around individual ideas that could potentially become compelling standalone pieces.

Palahniuk's fascination with commodified screams was exactly that kind of subject. It was unusual, immediately understandable and closely connected to the novel's larger themes, but interesting enough to work independently of a conventional book-promotion interview.

I conducted the interview, then shaped this portion of the conversation into its own promotional video through editing and visual packaging.

The approach was part of a larger content strategy I developed at Hachette: design the interview for extensibility before the camera starts rolling. A single conversation with an author could become multiple focused pieces, each built around a different idea and each capable of reaching an audience on its own.
