What inspired Susannah Cahalan to investigate one of the most influential—and controversial—experiments in the history of psychiatry?

Cahalan discusses the personal experiences and unanswered questions that led her to write The Great Pretender, her investigation into psychologist David Rosenhan’s famous pseudopatient experiment and the larger questions it raised about psychiatric diagnosis and mental healthcare.

How it was made

This video came from the same in-depth interview I conducted with Susannah Cahalan that later produced the HBG Films short Pseudopatient in a Netherworld.

My approach to author interviews was to develop questions capable of generating substantial, self-contained stories rather than short promotional soundbites. Asking Cahalan what inspired her to write The Great Pretender gave her room to connect the book to her own experiences and explain the curiosity that ultimately drove her investigation.

I shaped that response into a focused standalone video about the origin of the book, while recognizing that other portions of the same conversation had entirely different editorial possibilities.

That was central to my content strategy at Hachette: develop the interview with multiple potential stories in mind, then allow the strongest material to determine what each finished piece should become. One conversation could support straightforward book marketing, educational content, recurring series—and, when an unexpected story emerged, something more ambitious like HBG Films.
