N. K. Jemisin takes viewers inside The Broken Earth, her acclaimed trilogy comprising The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky.
Drawing on Jemisin’s own perspective, the video explores the world, ideas and storytelling behind the epic fantasy saga and offers readers a deeper introduction to the series from the author who created it.
This piece came from the same in-depth interview I conducted with N. K. Jemisin that ultimately produced The People Beneath the Clouds, but the two videos served very different editorial purposes.
While The People Beneath the Clouds grew from an unexpected story I discovered during our conversation, this piece focused directly on Jemisin’s work—drawing from the interview material in which she discussed The Broken Earth saga and the ideas behind it.
That distinction reflects a larger part of the video strategy I developed at Hachette. I didn't approach an author interview as material for a single deliverable. I conducted broader conversations that could reveal multiple stories, then identified and shaped those stories according to their strongest editorial purpose.
In this case, one interview produced both a focused exploration of a major fantasy series and an entirely separate short documentary about race and representation in science fiction—two distinct pieces of programming built from the same conversation.
