Physician, bioethicist and health-policy expert Ezekiel Emanuel joins Clive Priddle on The Current for a timely conversation about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Drawing on decades of experience in medicine, public health and government policy, Emanuel brings an expert perspective to the questions dominating everyday life during the crisis—helping put an unprecedented public-health emergency into a broader medical and policy context.
One of the reasons I created The Current around PublicAffairs was the extraordinary range of expertise already represented by its authors.
The COVID shutdown had eliminated most traditional author appearances just as audiences were looking for credible voices to help them understand an enormous number of rapidly unfolding events. PublicAffairs had authors who weren't simply promoting books—they were journalists, researchers and subject-matter experts who could speak directly to what was happening.
Ezekiel Emanuel was a perfect example.
For this episode, the remote format allowed Clive Priddle to draw on his existing relationship with Emanuel and have a substantive conversation about the pandemic at a moment when that expertise was especially relevant.
I produced and recorded the conversation remotely using Wirecast, then edited and visually packaged the episode with the motion graphics and supporting imagery I had developed for the series.
Episodes like this demonstrated that The Current could do more than replace the author appearances we had lost during COVID. The circumstances that forced us to create the show also made it possible to turn PublicAffairs' roster of authors into a timely source of informed conversation about the events people were experiencing in real time.
