Dr. Mike Cooks: Dijon Salmon

Producer, Writer, Editor

Dr. Mike Fenster heads into the kitchen to prepare Dijon salmon, combining practical cooking instruction with his distinctive perspective as both a physician and professionally trained chef.

Created as a cooking segment for the Dr. Mike pilot, the recipe demonstrates the central idea behind the show: food, health and great cooking don't have to exist in separate worlds.

How it was made

The cooking segments were an essential part of the Dr. Mike pilot I developed around Dr. Mike Fenster. His unusual combination of medical expertise and genuine culinary training gave us an opportunity to create something more substantial than either a traditional health show or a conventional cooking program.

For segments like Dijon Salmon, I wanted viewers to experience him first as an engaging cook. The health and medical knowledge could emerge naturally through the preparation rather than turning the recipe into a lecture.

That balance informed the larger pilot as well. Cooking demonstrations were combined with conversations with food producers and other field segments, giving Dr. Mike opportunities to explore food from several perspectives while keeping his personality and expertise at the center.

The Dijon Salmon segment demonstrates the format at its simplest: an appealing, achievable recipe that also reinforces the show's larger premise—that understanding food can be as important as simply being told what you should or shouldn't eat.
