The Deal gets out of the studio and into the kitchen as host Norman Brannon visits No. 7 Sub Shop to meet chef Tyler Kord—the man described as “The Willy Wonka of Sandwiches.”
The segment explores Kord’s unconventional approach to one of the simplest foods imaginable, giving Norman—and the audience—a closer look at the personality and creativity behind the menu.
Location remotes were an important part of The Deal’s magazine-style format, giving us opportunities to move beyond the studio and introduce viewers to interesting people, businesses and experiences around New York.
For this segment, I went on location with host Norman Brannon to capture his visit with Tyler Kord at No. 7 Sub Shop.
Unlike the controlled host segments we could batch in the studio, remotes required a more nimble production approach. The location was both our set and part of the story, so the goal was to capture the interview while also gathering enough environmental and observational footage to establish the personality of the place and give the finished piece its own visual identity.
Once the material was captured, I edited the remote as a self-contained feature that could then be programmed as one of the original editorial components within a larger episode of The Deal.
Segments like this helped give the show its magazine structure: studio hosts provided continuity, while independently produced interviews, performances and location stories gave each weekly episode variety.
