What happens after we close our eyes—and why do we dream?

In this episode of The Right Side of the Bed, host Adesina Sanchez explores the strange and fascinating world of dreams through a collection of segments examining what happens in our minds while we sleep.

Blending expert insight with the series’ lighter, lifestyle-driven approach, the episode looks at dreaming from several angles while separating some of the mystery surrounding our nighttime lives from what sleep science can actually tell us.

How it was made

I created The Right Side of the Bed in collaboration with the National Sleep Foundation as a 10-episode series that could combine credible sleep science with the accessible, personality-driven programming we were developing at HealthiNation.

The show was produced modularly. Rather than shooting each episode sequentially, I scheduled host material, expert interviews, location remotes and other segments separately over several weeks. Those individual components could then be assembled editorially into themed episodes like this one on dreaming.

That approach gave us considerably more production flexibility. We could capture multiple pieces with Adesina together, schedule remotes around location access, and maximize our time with a sleep specialist working with the National Sleep Foundation, whose expertise gave the series an authoritative scientific foundation.

Medical accuracy was also built into the production process. Like the other health programming I produced at HealthiNation, the series was created within the company’s URAC-accredited editorial framework, with content reviewed for medical accuracy.

The result was a format that could move comfortably between entertainment, lifestyle storytelling and expert health information while maintaining a consistent editorial voice across all 10 episodes.
